IGGY HISTORY

The Italian Greyhound (IG, IGGY) is a breed of dog that is believed to have originated in ancient Egypt about 2,000 years ago. They were considered a prized possession of the aristocracy and were often depicted in artwork and sculptures. The breed was also popular in ancient Rome, where they were favored by the elite for their beauty and agility.

During the Renaissance, the breed experienced a resurgence in popularity in Italy and began to spread throughout Europe. They were often kept as lap dogs and were a favorite of many royal families, including the Medici of Florence and the Habsburgs of Austria.

In the 1700s, the breed was imported to England where it gained popularity as a pet and companion dog. It was during this time that the breed began to be bred for its small size and delicate features, rather than its original purpose as a hunting dog.

By the 1800s, the breed had made its way to America, where it quickly became a popular pet among the wealthy. They were often seen in the laps of ladies as they traveled by carriage, and were known for their grace, elegance, and loyalty to their owners.

Despite their popularity, the Italian Greyhound faced many challenges over the years. During World War II, the breed nearly became extinct due to the lack of breeding programs and the destruction of their natural habitats. After the war, however, dedicated breeders worked to restore the breed to its former glory.

Today, the Italian Greyhound remains a beloved pet and companion dog. They are known for their gentle nature, loyalty, and affectionate personalities. Many people are drawn to their sleek and elegant appearance, as well as their intelligence and ability to learn quickly.

In conclusion, the history of the Italian Greyhound is a fascinating story of a breed that has been prized for centuries for its beauty, grace, and loyalty. From ancient Egypt to modern-day America, this breed has captured the hearts of many and continues to be a beloved pet and companion to people all over the world.
